The area of a Karankawa Indian village was chosen to establish what is known as League City. The city was founded by three different families. Their names were the Butlers, Cowarts, and Perkins. The earliest resident of the town, George W. Butler, arrived in the city in 1873 from Louisiana. In 1893, he was followed by J.C. League who acquired rights of the land. League acquired these rights from a man named Muldoon who had become a priest and relinquished his rights over the land. In the beginning, the early settlers raised cattle, but as time went on, they turned to agriculture in order to sell land to farmers.
