Killeen is located in Bell County, Texas. The economy of Killeen is very dependent on Fort Hood and their soldiers. The military base is one of the largest bases in the United States.
In the year 1881, the Gulf, Colorado, and Santa Fe Railway, constructed a railroad through the Central Texas area. The company established a town and named it Killeen in commendation to a man named Frank P. Killeen who was the assistant general manager for the railroad. In the year 1884, the town of Killeen had a few general stores, a couple of grist mills, two cotton gins, a hotel and a lumberyard. Killeenbecame a important shipping center for grains, wool, and cotton.
By the year 1900, around 780 people lived in Killeen. In the year 1905, a special event occurred for Killeen when politicians and businessmen had the ability to persuade the Texas legislature to build bridges over Cowhouse Creek and other streams which caused the city's trading area to expand tremendously.
In 1942 a memorable event occurred, when Camp Hood was built as the military training post during World War II. Soldiers along with their families migrated to Killeen with people working for construction which caused an enormous growth in the population. More than 300 farms and ranches were taken away because of the land requirements of Camp Hood.
The cotton gins that were located in Killeen and agricultural businesses were destroyed. To provide services for the military personnel and the military base became major factors in the city's economy. When most of the military base personnel left the area after World War II ended, Killeen went through a depressing recession. However, Fort Hood, which used to be known as Camp Hood, became a permanent military base in 1950 and the economy began to prosper.
