DeSoto, Texas, is located in the Dallas county. It is 13 miles Southeast of Grand Prairie, Texas and 14 miles South of Dallas, Texas. The city of DeSoto is included in the Dallas metropolitan area. As of the year 2000 census, around 37,650 people lived in DeSoto.
The first settlers arrived in this area of DeSoto in the year 1847, making it one of the oldest North Texas communities. A post office was established in the year 1881, and was named DeSoto after Thomas Hernando DeSoto Stewart, who was a doctor who provided great service to the community. After World War II, DeSoto and its neighboring areas saw improved development in the area. The residents needed some incorporation in order to improve the water distribution system in their area. They petitioned the Dallas County judge for incorporation in 1949. The petition was a success, and it led to the establishment of the City of DeSoto on March 3, 1949.
