The majority of the region was included in a substantial land grant named "New Helvetia", which was given to John Sutter by the Spanish people. Yuba City was founded in 1849 on acreage acquired from John Sutter by Samuel Brannan, Henry Cheever and Pierson Reading. Yuba City was utilized as a supply center for the minors during the Gold Rush. When the Gold Rush had ended settlers began to arrive in Yuba City due to the silt and agriculture soon became a primary factor for the economy.
