The Town of Tulare was founded in 1872. It was used by the S Pacific Railroad as its headquarters in the San Joaquin Valley. It was established as a city in 1888. In 1891, the S Pacific Railroad shifted its headquarters to Bakersfield, forcing the residents to turn to farming for their survival.
