It was to be the first in a chain of settlements along a transportation route linking the S California port of San Pedro to the home of the Mormon's Church of Latter Day Saints in Salt Lake City. But, by 1857 2/3 of the Mormons returned to Utah when they were recalled by their leader, Brigham Young. The return occurred in spite of having built an infrastructure of roads, saw mills, and agricultural irrigation, not to mention shelter. In the 1870's brought the very profitable introduction of navel oranges to the region. This was followed by a gold rush in the 1880's. The temperatures averaged 90 degrees an average of 101 days of the year. In San Bernardino, California ir rains around 16 inches each year. The metropolitan area of Riverside-San Bernardino was named one of the "Top 25 Large Cities for Doing Business In" by Inc. Magazine in 2004.
