The Miwok, Yokut and Mono Indians were the original residents of the region. In 1827, a small contingent of hunters arrived from Salt Lake City. The Gold Rush of 1849 brought miners to the county and serious problems occurred between the miners and the Indians. The Miwok and the Yokut were almost destroyed by a local battalion. Settlers came in to farm the fertile soil. Grapes and wheat were common crops.
The first lumber mill was constructed in 1852 and lumber became an important factor for the region's economy. In 1874, the California Lumber Company established a business in the county. The company constructed flumes and filled them with water to transport timber down to the city of Madera. The arrival of the timber was a large factor in the development of Madera.
